The Law Society's Plan for the period 1 April 2006 to 31 March 2007

On 10 March 2006, the Law Society submitted a Plan, which the Commissioner declared inadequate, on 3 April, as it did not include all the targets she had set and did not aim to deliver sufficient improvements in complaints handling. Following this decision the Commissioner provided the Law Society with the opportunity to make representations to her as to whether she should impose a penalty and if so how much. The Law Society provided both written and oral representations and after taking these and other factors into account the Commissioner notified the Law Society on 17 May 2006 of her decision to levy a penalty of £250,000.

On 27 July 2006 the Law Society submitted a new Plan which the Commissioner declared adequate.

In recognition of the Law Society's co-operation and the efforts it made since her decision to impose a fine, the Commissioner decided to adjust the penalty to £220,000. The Commissioner will monitor and assess the Law Society's performance against this Plan throughout 2006-07.
